Urban Myth…and Vanderbilt

After witnessing last year’s Florida game, I figured it would be tough for any game to top the the sack, the block, and the score. Lo and behold, it happened. Auburn went into the Swamp (or, as I call it, the Jungle-South) and beat Florida not once, but twice. Urban Meyer’s grade-school timeout call to make Wes Byrum re-kick from 43 yards out did nothing to the freshman with ice water in his veins. He promptly nailed the second one, setting off a celebration I can only describe as bedlam. I remember hugging about ten people, nine of whom I did not know, and bruising my face on a horn while jumping back three rows to high-five someone. Walking Running back to the buses was an experience, but nothing, from what I’ve been told, compared to LSWho. Bus eight was rocking on the way home, until everyone hit a wall and fell asleep despite the massive amount of candy George was attempting to hand out. Arriving in Auburn was followed by a sunrise visit (at least for me) to Toomers to see the beauty of toilet paper a foot deep everywhere.

What Auburn had done didn’t really set in until Sunday afternoon when I finally woke up. Florida had not lost in the swamp in eighteen straight games, seventeen straight (as in all of them) under Urban Meyer. Oh, and Alabama lost to Florida State, Kentucky and South Florida are in the top ten, and Kansas State beat Texas. Absolutely amazing.

This week brings an 11:30 start at Jordan-Hare and an opponent in Vanderbilt that has not ever beaten us in Auburn. They also have not beaten us since 1955. The Commodores, however, are 3-1, with their the lone loss coming from a good less than average Alabama team. Of course, their three wins have come in scrimmages games with Richmond, Ole Miss, and Eastern Michigan. Their defense is actually pretty good, but games against teams like the ones they have played will make you look pretty good. One interesting fact to note: Auburn has lost their last three 11:30 am SEC games (Arkansas, Georgia, and Mississippi State). That streak ends Saturday.

Of course, the 11:30 am start means… 5:30 am sectionals! Party on.
