National Signing Day

There has been no real football played in nearly a month. Sure, that was almost the best Super Bowl ever. But I mean, come on, the only football that really matters is played on Saturdays.

What do you do to fill the void? Well, there’s recruiting. And any serious Alabama fan knows that championships are won on National Signing Day, this Wednesday, when thousands of high school seniors sit in the school library (seriously, the library?) and pick from a group of hats signifying which schools they have been recruited by/are interested in. By now, a lot of big names have already decided where they are going to be playing (and learning!) next year. A few have not. Like Julio Jones, who is supposedly the savior of Alabama’s receiving corps. In fact, he is so amazing, these guys described him thusly: “If you haven’t heard of Julio, he is apparently a once-in-a-lifetime combination of Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Jesus, the Terminator, Alexander the Great, and Superman, with the whip appeal of Tyson Beckford. In other words, almost as good as DJ Hall. And those in the know say that he’s going to sign with the Tide.” Of course, he still has to decide to sign with Alabama. And qualify for school. And be as good as advertised once he hits the collegiate playing field.

Not to mention rumor has it that Jones was kicked off his Florida recruiting visit for trying to persuade other recruits to come to Oklahoma, who is also recruiting him, along with Florida State, who somehow is still in the running for him despite the fact that they don’t have a single quarterback on their roster that would start anywhere else.

Guys like Julio are gonna save teams right? They’re gonna turn a program like Alabama around. Right. Just like Mike Shula’s recruiting was so good. Sarah Jessica Parker-Wilson was the savior at quarterback, until…until…well, 6-6. Two years in a row.

I love following recruiting as much as anyone. I need my football fix in the winter, even if it is 75 degrees outside. But truth be told, as long as Auburn continues to win the Iron Bowl ever year and be competitive for the SEC Championship and beyond (couchtheNATIONALCHAMPIONSHIPcough), I’m pretty happy. I don’t need to see 90,000 fans at our spring game to know what’s coming next year.
